It's the Olympics! Part 2.

Olympics in Japanese is either called オリンピック　or 　五輪（ごりん）meaning "5 rings.”

In the first part of this lesson I introduced how to say the names of all the Olympic events and a few headlines so show you how they are used.

This time, I want to go over some specific words that you will definitely run into if you are following the Olympics in Japanese. I will be using example sentences directly from news articles about the Rio Olympics to teach you all about sports vocabulary!

選手（せんしゅ）- Athlete
日本代表選手または日本代表チームをご紹介させていただいています。
にほん　だいひょう　せんしゅ　または　にほん　だいひょう　ちーむ　を　ごしょうかい　させて　いただいています。
An introduction to the athletes and teams that represent Japan.
Literally: “Japan + represent + athlete + and + Japan + represent + team + を + introduce + is doing + received”
Note: 選手 is also used as a title after an athlete's name, like 水谷選手（みずたにせんしゅ）.

メダル - Medal
リオ五輪１０日目 日本のメダルは２６個に
りお　ごりん　とおかめ　にほん　の　めだる　は　にじゅうろっ　こ　に
Rio Olympics Day 10 Japan’s 26 medals
Literally: “Rio + Olympics + 10th day + Japan + の + medal + は + 26 + counter for small objects + に”
Note: The ending に in a news article indicates movement. So this is showing that Japan has gained 26 medals, that the state of having 26 was achieved.

目指す（めざす）- To aim at, to have an eye on
リオ五輪１１日目見どころ 白井が跳馬でメダル目指す
りお　ごりん　じゅういちにちめ　みどころ　しらい　が　ちょうば　で　めだる　めざす
Rio Olympics 11th day Highlight Shirai Aims for Medal on Vault
Literally: “Rio + Olympics + 11th day + highlight + Shirai + が + vault + で + medal + aim for”

競技（きょうぎ）- Game, match, event
夏季オリンピックのスポーツ競技の一覧である。
かき　おりんぴっく　の　すぽーつ　きょうぎ　の　いちらん　である。
The Summer Olympics sports events at a glance.
Literally: “summer + Olympics + の + sports + event + glance + である”
Note: である is a form of です often used in news articles to denote formality.

予選（よせん）- Preliminary, qualifier
福島が予選落ち 女子２００予選
ふくしま　が　よせんおち　じょし　にひゃく　よせん
Fukushima omitted from women’s 200m qualifiers
Literally: “Fukushima + が + qualifier omission + women + 200 + qualifiers”

記録（きろく） - Record
ファンニーケルクが男子４００ｍで１７年ぶりに世界記録更新した
ふぁんにーけるく　が　だんし　よんひゃく　めーとる　で　じゅうななねん　ぶり　に　せかい　きろく　こうしん　した。
Van Niekerk sets new world record for Men’s 400m.
Literally: “Van Niekerk + が + men + 400m + で + 17 year + time passed + に + world + record + renew + did”

連覇（れんぱ）- Successive win
【陸上】ボルト、９秒８１で五輪１００メートル３連覇！
【りくじょう】ぼると、きゅう　びょう　はち　いち　で　ごりん　ひゃく　めーとる　さん　れんぱ！
[Track] Bolt, 9.81 seconds for Olympic 100 meter, 3rd successive win!
Literally: “track + bolt + 9 + seconds + 81 + Olympics + 100 + meter + 3 + successive win”

得点（とくてん）- Score, points made
リオ五輪の男子サッカーでドイツが驚異の10得点！
りお　ごりん　の　だんし　さっかー　で　どいつ　が　きょうい　の　じゅっ　とくてん！
Rio Olympics Germany scores a miraculous 10 points in Men’s Soccer!
Literally: “Rio + Olympics + の + men + soccer + で + Germany + が + miracle + の + 10 + points”

同点（どうてん）- Draw, tie
8月8日、日本対コロンビアの一戦が行われ2-2と同点で終わった。
はちがつ　ようか、にほん　たい　ころんびあ　の　いっせん　が　おこなわれ　に　たい　に　と　どうてん　で　おわった。
August 8th, Japan vs Columbia game ends in a 2-2 draw.
Literally: “August + 8th + Japan + versus + Columbia + の + game + が + do + 2-2 + と + draw + で + ended”

決勝（けっしょう）- Finals
リオ五輪バレーボール女子 アルゼンチンに勝利し決勝トーナメント進出
りお　ごりん　ばれーぼーる　じょし　あるぜんちん　に　しょうり　し　けっしょう　とーなめんと　しんしゅつ
Rio Olympics Women’s Volleyball - Argentina wins finals for tournament advancement
Literally: “Rio + Olympics + volleyball + women + Argentina + に + triumph + し + finals + tournament + advance”

金銀銅（きん　ぎん　どう）- Gold Silver Bronze
リオ五輪 金銀銅のメダル獲得 萩野公介選手に話を聞きました。
りお　ごりん　きん　ぎん　どう　の　めだる　かくとく　はぎの　こうすけ　せんしゅ　に　はなし　を　ききました。

Literally: “Rio + Olympics + gold silver bronze + の + medal + acquire + Hagino Kosuke + athlete + に + conversation + を + listened”

監督（かんとく）- Coach, manager

さっかー　ごりん　だいひょう　の　てぐらもり　かんとく　が　きこく

Literally: “soccer + Olympics + representative + の + Teguramori + coach + が + returns home”

観戦（かんせん）- Watching a sports game
スマホでリオ五輪を観戦する方法も調べてみました。
すまほ　で　りお　ごりん　を　かんせん　する　ほうほう　も　しらべて　みました。
