570 - に加えて

As is sometimes the case, this N2 lesson is nice and straightforward.

Yay...

JLPT N2: ~に加えて (in addition to)

We've seen the verb 加える (くわえる // to add) before.

For example, we saw the following sentence in the lesson [NDL #216] - This Soup Has Some Punch:

にんにくを加えるとパンチのきいた味になる。
にんにく を くわえる と パンチ の きいた あじ に なる。
Adding garlic gives the flavor an extra punch.
Literally: "garlic + を + add + と + punch + の + was effective + flavor + becomes."

By no leap of the imagination, it makes sense, then, that に加えて means "in addition to:"

来年モロッコに引っ越すので、アラビア語教室に加えて、モロッコ料理教室にも通い始めました。
らいねん モロッコ に ひっこす ので、 アラビアご きょうしつ にくわえて、 モロッコりょうり きょうしつ に も かよい はじめました。
I’m moving to Morocco next year, so I’ve begun taking Moroccan cooking lessons in addition to Arabic lessons.
Literally: “next year + Morocco + に + move + because (=ので), + Arabic + classroom + in addition to, + Morocco + food / cooking + classroom + にも + started commuting to / started attending.”

Another joyous bit of news is that this grammar point is easy to use in sentences. Just put a noun in front of it:

NOUNに加えて
in addition to NOUN

This is rather formal language, by the way. You're more likely to see it in written Japanese than to hear it spoken.

One more:

IKEAの家具は、北欧らしいおしゃれなデザインに加えて、その安さも魅力の一つです。
イケア の かぐ は、 ほくおう らしい おしゃれな デザイン にくわえて、 その やすさ も みりょく の ひとつ です。
In addition to having fashionable Northern European designs, another good thing about IKEA furniture is its affordability.
Literally: “IKEA + の + furniture + は, + Northern Europe + -ish / typical of / appropriate for + fashionable + design + in addition to, + that + cheapness / affordability + も + charm / attraction / appeal + の + one (thing) + です.”

Let's not forget this handy formula:

i-adjective [or VERB] = NOUN

That's why we're able to put うまいの in front of に加えて in the following sentence without breaking the rule that requires a NOUN to come directly before に加えて:

彼女は字がうまいにくわえて、絵もうまい。
かのじょ は じ が うまい の にくわえて、 え も うまい。
In addition to having nice handwriting, she is also good at drawing.
Literally: “she + は + handwriting (=[written] character) + が + skilled + の + in addition to, + picture + も + skilled.”

Last one:

日本は地震や台風が多いに加えて、噴火の可能性がある活火山も多いので、自然災害大国と言えるでしょう。
にほん は じしん や たいふう が おおい の にくわえて、 ふんか の かのうせい が ある かっかざん も おおい ので、 しぜんさいがい たいこく と いえる でしょう。
In addition to having frequent earthquakes and typhoons, Japan also has many active volcanoes that could erupt at any time. Accordingly, it’s fair to say that it’s one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world.
Literally: “Japan + は + earthquake + や + typhoon + が + many + の + in addition to, + eruption + の + possibility + が + there is + active volcano + も + many + because (=ので), + natural disaster + large country / major power + と + can say + でしょう.”

And that's it. We've made it through another one.

DJ Khaled would be proud.
