220 - Audacious Suggestions

Very, very, very, very simple lesson today.

Kind of.

I hope.

Step #1, get yo-self a verb.

Let's use the verb 辞める (やめる // to quit one's job).

Step #2, put yo' verb in plain past tense form.

辞める → 辞めた
やめる → やめた

Step #3, add ら.

辞めた → 辞めたら
やめた → やめたら

This is the "tara conditional." So technically 辞めたら means "if you quit."

But we're gonna take that even further...

Step #4, add a question mark.

辞めたら → 辞めたら?
やめたら → やめたら?
if you quit → Why don't you quit?

And just like that, we've made a somewhat blunt suggestion.

Recap:

Why don't you VERB?
 =
VERB ending in ~たら?

Examples:

試しにやってみたら?
ためし に やって みたら?
Why don't you just give it a try?
Literally: "trial + に + do (and) + if you saw?"

Note: For more on using te-form with みる, check out: [NDL #57] - Try Doing VS Try to Do.

本人に聞いてみたら?
ほんにん に きいて みたら?
Why don't you just ask him? // Why don't you just ask her directly?
Literally: "the person himself + に + ask (and) + if you saw?"

そろそろ車の免許とったら?
そろそろ くるま の めんきょ とったら?
Shouldn't you get a license pretty soon here?
Literally: "soon + car + の + license + if you took?"

少しは運動したら?
すこし は うんどう したら?
Why don't you exercise just a little bit?
Literally: "a little bit + は + exercise + if you did?"

今のうちに寝といたら?
いま の うちに ねといたら?
Why don't you go to bed now (since you won't have a chance to sleep later)?
Literally: "now + の + within + に + if you went to sleep?"

Note: We talk about using うちに this way in these lessons:

[NDL #96] - Home = I = Inside = While = Before?!
[NDL #97] - Home = I = Inside = While = Before?! 第2

Note #2: By combining ~て with おく, we can say "prepare by ~-ing." So for example, saying only 寝たら? would NOT have the nuance of "and get a good night's sleep," but adding おく makes it sound like the sleeping will prepare the listener for something. Oh and our て and おいたら are getting combined into ~といたら? Wow, too much info for one little note. ^_^

フルーツだけでも食べたら?
フルーツ だけ でも たべたら?
Why don't you at least have some fruit or something?
Literally: "fruit + only + even + if you ate?"

By the way, if you're offended by foul-mouthed magic deer, please contact your local senator. He probably hunts deer.
