In the last lesson, I wrote about a great website called NHK News Web Easy.

This news site is made for children and Japanese beginners.They publish about 3 or 4 short news stories every day with furigana for difficulty kanji, and even slow audio readings of each article. The sentences are simple and to the point, and most of the articles have a light tone.

Reading and listening to the news every day can make a huge difference in your Japanese level. Even if you don't have a lot of time to study, just looking over these short news articles will teach you some useful vocabulary, and get you used to listening to Japanese.

I want to go over a few of these articles and you guys can judge if they could be helpful for you to use while studying Japanese. The first article was about President Obama.

Article Two:

This article is about the volcano that erupted in Kumamoto Prefecture.

熊本県の阿蘇山で噴火
くまもと　けん　の　あそさん　で　ふんか
Kumamoto Prefecture Aso Mountain Erupts.
Literally: “Kumamoto + prefecture + の + Mt. Asobe + で + eruption”

熊本県の阿蘇山の中岳第一火口で８日の午前１時４６分ごろ、噴火がありました。
くまもと　けん　の　あそさん　の　なかだけ　だいいち　かこう　で　ようか　の　ごぜん　いちじよんじゅうろっぷん　ごろ、ふんか　が　ありました。
An eruption of Mt. Asobe’s first Nakadake crater occurred on the 8th at 1:46 in the morning in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Literally: “Kumamoto + prefecture + の + Mt. Asobe + の + Nakadake + first + crater + で + 8th + の + morning + 1:46 + around + eruption + が + ありました”

大きな石が火口から１.２ｋmぐらいの所まで飛んで、煙は高さ１万１０００mまで上がりました。
おおきな　いし　が　かこう　から　いってんに　きろめーとる　ぐらい　の　ところ　まで　とんで、けむり　は　たかさ　いちまんいっせん　めーとる　まで　あがりました。
Giant rocks flew from the crater about 1.2 kilometers away, and smoke rose 11,000 meters into the air.
Literally: “big + rocks + が + crater + from + 1.2 + kilometers + around + の + place + until + flew + smoke + は + height + 11,000 + meters + until + rose”

石が飛んできたり灰が降ったりした阿蘇市では、トマトやイチゴの畑などで被害がありました。
いし　が　とんできたり　はい　が　ふったりした　あそし　では、とまと　や　いちご　の　はたけ　など　で　ひがい　が　ありました。
Rocks flew and ash rained down on Asobe city, damaging tomato and strawberry crops.
Literally: “rocks + が + flew + ash + が + fell down + Asobe City + では + tomato + や + strawberry + の + field + etc.+ で + damage + が + ありました”

４月の地震のあと、阿蘇山の近くに観光に来る人が少なくなりました。
しがつ　の　じしん　の　あと、あそさん　の　ちかく　に　かんこう　に　くる　ひと　が　すくなく　なりました。
After the earthquake in April, near Mt. Asobe has had fewer people come to sight-see.
Literally: “April + の + earthquake + の + after + Mt. Asobe + の + near + に + sightseeing + に + come + people + が + fewer + became”

最近は店や旅館の客が増えていましたが、また少なくなるかもしれないと心配しています。
さいきん　は　みせ　や　りょかん　の　きゃく　が　ふえていました　が、また　すくなく　なる　かもしれない　と　しんぱい　しています。
Recently stores and Japanese inn’s have had an increase of guests, but are worried they might become fewer again.
Literally: “recently + は + stores + や + Japanese inn + の + guests + が + increased + が + again + fewer + become + might + と + worried + doing”

気象庁は、これからも同じような噴火が起こる可能性があると言っています。
きしょうちょう　は　これから　も　おなじ　ような　ふんか　が　おこる　かのうせい　が　ある　と　いっています。
The meteorological agency stated that after this, there is a possibility that more of the same kind of eruptions will occur.
Literally: "meteorological agency + は + from now + も + same + like + eruption + が + occur + possibility + が + ある + と + saying”

そして、とても熱い灰や大きな石が飛んでくる可能性があるため、火口から２ｋmぐらいの所には行かないように言っています。
そして、とても　あつい　はい　や　おおきな　いし　が　とんでくる　かのうせい　が　ある　ため、かこう　から　に　きろめーとる　ぐらい　の　ところ　には　いかない　ように　いっています。
They said that because of the possibility of very hot ash and big flying rocks, you should not go within 2 kilometers from the crater.
Literally: “thus + very + hot + ash + や + big + rocks + が + flying + possibility + が + ある + ため + crater + from + 2 + kilometers + around + の + place + には + don’t go + ように + saying”
