355 - Saving Water
Lately I have been doing a lot of translation work about climate change. It can get really depressing to learn about the damage we have done to the planet. :(
But there are a lot of things we can do every day to help the planet. When googling in Japanese about ways to save the Earth, there are so many great tips that come up. One of the best things I found was this little information packet on saving water. It is packed with useful grammar and vocabulary and full of great tips that we can all apply to our households.
Firstly, read through and see what you can pick up, then scroll down and we will go through line by line.
Keep in mind this uses a lot of polite language, so don't worry if you don't understand much the first pass through.
Note: If you are overwhelmed by the high volume of Japanese in this lesson, then just look at one or two sentences. All of these sentences have highly useful vocabulary needed for Japanese fluency.
家庭の水を節約しましょう。地球環境に最も影響を与える要因の一つが水の浪費です。水の節約は今すぐにみなさんで始めることができます。とりわけ、水不足の地域にお住まいの方は、水の節約によってその地域の環境保全に大きく貢献することにもなります。以下の項目の中からご自身ででき得る限りの対策をしましょう：
1. 水漏れをチェックして修理しましょう。水漏れを起こしている蛇口は不用な水を流し続けることになります。
2. 水を流しながら洗い物をしないようにしましょう。より少ない水量で食器を洗う方法があります。
3. 近年のトイレはより水を節約する設計のため、古いトイレは新しいものに買い換えましょう。
4. 洗濯物や洗い物は一度にまとめて洗うようにしましょう。
5. 庭の芝生への水まきをする際は、大量の水を使わないようにしましょう。
6. 蛇口から水を出しっぱなしで歯を磨かないように注意してください。
家庭の水を節約しましょう。

Let’s save water in the household.
Literally: “household + の + water + を + save + let’s do”

ちきゅう かんきょう に もっとも えいきょう を あたえる よういん の ひとつ が みず の ろうひ です。
The number one factor that has the most effect on the global environment is the wasting of water.
Literally: “global environment + に + most + effect + を + cause + primary factor + の + one thing + が + water + の + waste + です”
水の節約は今すぐにみなさんで始めることができます。
みず の せつやく は いますぐ に みなさん で はじめる こと が できます。
Saving water is something everyone can immediately start doing.
Literally: “water + の + saving + は + immediately + に + everyone + で + start + thing + が + can do”
とりわけ、水不足の地域にお住まいの方は、水の節約によってその地域の環境保全に大きく貢献することにもなります。
とりわけ、みずぶそく の ちいき に おすまい の かた は、みず の せつやく によって その ちいき の かんきょう ほぜん に おおきく こうけん する こと に も なります。
For those living in areas with water shortages in particular, saving water can become a huge contribution to environmental conservation in those areas.
Literally: “especially + water shortage + の + area + に + living + の + people + は + water + の + saving + by means of + that + area + の + environmental conservation + に + huge + contribution + do + thing + に + も + become”
Note: 方（かた） in this case means "person" it is a very polite way to say person.

Let’s take as many measures as we can from the following list:

みずもれ を チェック して しゅうり しましょう。
Let’s check and repair water leaks.
Literally: “water leaks + を + check + do (and) + repair + let’s do”
水漏れを起こしている蛇口は不用な水を流し続けることになります。
みずもれ を おこしている じゃぐち は ふよう な みず を ながし つづける こと に なります。
Leaky water facets cause continual water waste.
Literally: “water leaks + を + occurring + faucet + は + wasted + water + を + running + continue + thing + に + becomes”

水を流しながら洗い物をしないようにしましょう。
みず を ながしながら あらいもの を しない ように しましょう。
Let’s not leave the water running while doing the dishes.
Literally: “water + を + while running + washing (dishes)+ を + don’t do + ように + let’s do”
より少ない水量で食器を洗う方法があります。
より すくない すいりょう で しょっき を あらう ほうほう が あります。
There is a method to wash dishes that uses less water.
Literally: “less than + water amount + で + tableware + を + wash + method + が + is”

近年のトイレはより水を節約する設計のため、古いトイレは新しいものに買い換えましょう。
きんねん の トイレ は より みず を せつやく する せっけい のため、ふるい トイレ は あたらしい もの に かいかえましょう。
Because in recent years toilets are designed to save water, let’s replace old toilets with new ones.
Literally: “recent years + の + toilets + は + than + water + を + save + do + design + のため + old + toilets + は + new + things + に + let’s replace”
4.
洗濯物や洗い物は一度にまとめて洗うようにしましょう。
せんたくもの や あらいもの は いちど に まとめて あらう ように しましょう。
Let’s put clothes and dishes in batches and wash them all at one time.
Literally: “laundry + や + washing (dishes) + は + once + に + put together + wash + ように + let’s do”

庭の芝生への水まきをする際は、大量の水を使わないようにしましょう。
にわ の しばふ へ の みずまき を する さい は、たいりょう の みず を つかわない ように しましょう。
Let’s not use a lot of water when we water the lawn.
Literally: “yard + の + lawn + へ + の + watering + を + do + on the occasion + は + a large amount + の + water + を + don’t use + ように + let’s not”

蛇口から水を出しっぱなしで歯を磨かないように注意してください。
じゃぐち から みず を だしっぱなし で は を みがかない ように ちゅうい して ください。
Please be careful not to leave the faucet running when you brush your teeth.
Literally: “ faucet + from + water + を + leave running + で + teeth + を + don’t brush + ように + be careful + do + please”
Note: っぱなし added to a verb means "to keep doing V" or "to leave"
