If you feel anything like I do, you are hoping that this year will be just a little bit better than the last one.

2017 is the year of the Cock (Rooster, for those of you that are giggling right now). So in Japan there are roosters on everything from new years cards, to stuffed animals. Japan closely follows the Chinese zodiac and everyone seems to know about the animal of the year they were born.

Now I am sure you want to know what they are saying about your birth year right? Well first off, here is a chart to tell you the animal that represents the year you were born. The Kanji are the Chinese characters (some of which correspond to Japanese) and the hiragana in parentheses are the Japanese animal names:

Note: Now is a good time to note that the kanji for "year" is 年, which tends to be read as ねん after the number of a year or とし when it means "age." When it attaches to the end of our zodiac animals, the reading will be どし.

Note: It is very hard to translate 素直 into English. Someone who is 素直 is straightforward and honest. You could translate it as "frank," but 素直 does not have a "strong" connotation. A 素直 person would not be very confrontational. This word always has a positive nuance.

おだやか。
Calm.

おせっかい。
Nosy.

どこでも生きていけるねずみだけに、環境にスッと馴染む人。逞しい生命力の持ち主。

Note: There is no good translation for this, just as there was no good translation for 素直 (すなお), which we saw above. However, it may help to note that 偏屈 is, in many ways, the opposite of 素直.

Unmanageable when angry.
Literally: “losing one's temper + と + unmanageable”

穏やかそうに見えるが、牛が暴走したら止まらないのと同じで、キレると厄介な人が多い。でも普段はだいたい穏やかで優しい。
