593 - The Perfect Wife
The other day, Rei came across this essay that a Japanese fourth-grader wrote about his ideal wife.
I thought it might be fun to look at it.
First, some key vocab:
お嫁さん（およめさん // bride; [new] wife）
僕（ぼく // I (used by males only)）
優しい（やさしい // nice; kind; tender; gentle）
飲みに行く（のみにいく // to go drinking [=drinking + に + go]）
済む（すむ // to finish; to end; to be completed）
給料（きゅうりょう // salary; income）
少ない（すくない // few; a little; scarce）
お小遣い（おこづかい // allowance; pocket money）
減らす（へらす // to decrease; to reduce; to shorten）
うるさい（うるさい // noisy; annoying; nagging）
文句を言う（もんくをいう // to complain [=complaint + を + say]）
Since the essay was written by a fourth-grader, you'll notice that does not use kanji for a lot of these words, opting to just use hiragana instead.
The Original Essay
お嫁さん
ぼくは、やさしいお嫁さんをもらいます。
友達とお酒を飲みに行った時
こわいお嫁さんは
「今まで何やってたの。
早く風呂に入って寝なさい。」
と言うけど、
やさしいお嫁さんなら
「早く寝なさい。」
だけですむからです。
あと、給料が少なかったら
こわいお嫁さんは
「給料が少ないから、おこづかいをへらす。」
と言うけど、
やさしいお嫁さんなら
「あら、少なかったのね。」
だけですむからです。
あと、うるさいお嫁さんと
文句を言うお嫁さんも欲しくないです。
うるさいのと文句を言う女は
お母さんだけで十分です。
Now let's go through and break this short essay down sentence by sentence.
I think you'll find that fourth graders can string together some pretty long phrases...

My Future Wife
Literally: “wife / bride”
Although the title is technically just saying "Bride" or "(New) Wife," in English I thought that a title like "My Future Wife" was more appropriate.
ぼくは、やさしいお嫁さんをもらいます。
ぼく は、 やさしい およめさん を もらいます。
I am going to have a nice wife.
Literally: “I + は, + nice / gentle + wife / bride + を + receive.”
友達とお酒を飲みに行った時
こわいお嫁さんは
「今まで何やってたの。
早く風呂に入って寝なさい。」
と言うけど、
やさしいお嫁さんなら
「早く寝なさい。」
だけですむからです。
ともだち と おさけ を のみにいった とき、
こわい およめさん は
「いま まで なに やってた の。
はやく ふろ に はいって ねなさい。」
と いう けど、
やさしい およめさん なら
「はやく ねなさい。」
だけ で すむ から です。
Because after drinking with friends, a scary wife says, “What have you been doing? Hurry up and take a bath and go to bed.” But if she’s a nice wife, all she says is “Hurry up and go to bed.”
Literally: “friend + と + alcohol + を + went to drink (=drinking + に + went) + time, + scary + wife / bride + は +「now + until + what + were doing + の. + quickly + bath + に + enter (and) + go to bed (=[command]).」 + と + say + but, + nice / gentle + wife / bride + if (it is the case that) + 「quickly + go to bed (=[command]).」+ only + で + gets finished / is completed + から (=because) + です.”

Also, because if you don’t make very much money, a scary wife says “Since you aren’t making a lot of money, I’m cutting your allowance.” But a nice wife just says “Oh, you didn’t make very much, did you?” and that’s all.
Literally: “additionally / also, + salary / income + が + if it was small/few, + scary + wife / bride + は + 「salary / income + が + small / few + から (=because), + allowance / pocket money + を + decrease.」 + と + say + but, + nice / gentle + wife / bride + if (it is the case that) + 「oh, + was small/few + の + ね.」 + only + で + gets finished / is completed + から (=because) + です.”
あと、うるさいお嫁さんと
文句を言うお嫁さんも欲しくないです。

Also, I don’t want a wife that nags or complains.

うるさいのと文句を言う女は
お母さんだけで十分です。
うるさい の と もんく を いう おんな は
おかあさん だけ で じゅうぶん です。
I already get enough nagging and complaining from another woman―my mom.
Literally: “noisy / annoying / nagging + の + と + complaint + を + say + woman + は + mom + only + で + enough + です.”
Although the vocabulary being used in the above sentences isn't too complicated, due to the variety of grammatical constructions being used, they could be quite difficult to understand if you aren't around JLPT N4 level or so.
If you're not at that level yet, then you should still be able to at least somewhat understand the translations by looking at the word-by-word breakdowns.
If all of this seems overwhelming, then maybe just focus on the vocab list at the beginning of the lessons, or just one of the phrases from the essay. No one said you had to master all of the lesson on your first try. ^^
