769 - をしている

JLPT N4: をしている (has [description])

One way that we can describe (the physical appearance of) things is with the phrase をしている.

Specifically:「NOUNをしている

An example:

マリアさんはきれいなをしています
マリアさん は きれいな て を しています。
Maria-san has pretty hands.
Literally: “Maria-san + は + pretty + hand + を + is doing.”

Be careful to only use をしている for observations. Most commonly these will be visual observations, but that's not the only case. You could, for example, replace 手 (// hand) with 声 (こえ // voice) in the above sentence.

Another example:

A:
赤いをしていますよ。花粉症ですか?
あかい め を しています よ。 かふんしょう です か?
Your eyes are red. Do you have allergies?
Literally: “red + eye + を + are doing + よ. + hay fever + です + か?”

B:
そうなんです。
そう なんです。
Yes, I do.
Literally: “that’s right.”

Yet another example:

ブタの鼻は、おもしろいをしていますね。
ブタ の はな は、 おもしろい かたち を しています ね。
Pigs’ noses are funny looking, aren’t they?
Literally: “pig + の + nose + は, + fun / interesting / funny + shape + を + are doing + ね.”

When a NOUN comes right after をしている, you also have the option of saying をした instead:

この変なをした果物は何ですか。
この へんな いろ をした くだもの は なん です か。
What is this strange-colored fruit?
Literally: “this + strange + color + を + did + fruit + は + what + です + か.”

Answer: We say (を)してる.

In other words, we remove the from をしている, and we will often drop the particle , as well.

An example:

A:
どうしたの。疲れたしてるよ。
どうしたの。 つかれた かお してる よ。
What’s happened? You look tired.
Literally: “what’s the matter / what happened. + became tired + face + are doing + よ.”

B:
昨日眠れなかったの。
きのう ねむれなかった の。
I couldn’t sleep last night.
Literally: “yesterday + couldn’t sleep + の.”

By the way, you wouldn't usually use ~をしている to describe yourself:

✕ わたしは白いをしています
✕ わたし は しろい は をしています。
✕ I have white teeth.
✕ Literally: “I + は + white + teeth + を + am doing.”

Use it to describe other people:

〇 マルコさんは白いをしています
〇 マルコさん は しろい は をしています。
〇 Marco-san has white teeth.
〇 Literally: “Marco-san + は + white + teeth + を + am doing.”

If you did want to say "I have white teeth," you could say something like this, instead:

わたしの歯は白いです。
わたし の は は しろい です。
I have white teeth.
Literally: "I + の + teeth + は + white + です.
